War History of Macau
Macau’s war history is relatively limited compared to other regions, but it helps visitors understand the city’s peaceful character. As a Portuguese trading port from the 16th century, Macau avoided large-scale wars by maintaining neutrality and focusing on commerce. During World War II, although nearby areas were heavily affected, Macau remained officially neutral under Portuguese rule and became a refuge for displaced people. For foreign visitors, this background explains why Macau preserved much of its historic architecture and developed a culture centered on trade, diplomacy, and coexistence rather than conflict.
