Training while injured, and the importance of recovery time
Dear readers
I’ve been off the mats for a whole week now, due to a shoulder injury I’ve sustained during last practice. I don’t really remember how it happened because it didn’t hurt in the moment. The pain intensified awfully a few hours after practice and I could barely move.
It’s already much better now, but it is very frustrating when you can’t practice what you love because of an injury.
Some people will tell you that you should keep training “through” your injury, but I’m not a big fan of such claims. When you are hurt, your body needs time to recover. Training with an injured shoulder, knee or whatever it is will only delay your recovery, or could potentially make it worse.
That being said, I’m all for training while injured, just not BJJ. In my case I can’t put pressure on my shoulder, so I will train my lower body. Today I worked on my legs, but first of course it's important to stretch!
Unfortunately I've been "blessed" with other issues, mainly my lower back. Therefore, stretching is the most important part of my workout!
Yoga poses such as "downward dog" are really helpful to alleviate stiffness in legs and back.
In the following video I will show you a little of what I did. Like I say in the video, I'm no personal trainer or fitness coach. This is just me sharing my workout with you =)
PS: tomorrow I will go spar again and can't wait! OSS
Enjoy!

Yes shoulders are tricky. Lots of mobility comes at the price of less stability. So it's easy to over extend the joints involved.
it's actually somewhere in between my shoulder and my collarbone. It feels like a pinched nerve or muscle, I have no idea =). It's much better now but I can still feel it. Letting my arm hang down is actually more painful that using it, very strange...
That's really annoying nothing worse than being injured for people that work out all the time. You may need a deep massage to stop the muscles guarding and causing more pain around the injury. This can bring a lot of pain relief if you can find a good practitioner .
Its very dangerous to have shoulder injury.i have seen my sister suffering the same injury..take an exra care @evecab ...:)
Thanks Regine! It's already much better now =) I've had 2 training sessions since, without any problems. I think it was muscular, so nothing major
I remember hurting my ribcage in a boxing sparring match and I was out for 2 weeks. It was even hard to run because of the strain in the ribcage.
uuughhh that hurts! You can't breathe and when you cough it's a nightmare ahahha. Are you still boxing ow?
Sadly I am not boxing at this moment I can barely squeeze in a run these days hahaa.
When i get fat again I'll be sure to go back to boxing as it really burns my fat so fast.
I hope you do more of these videos, I hike and walk a lot but I don't do other sports. Somehow and without being aware my shoulder started to hurt, mostly when laying down. I really hadn´t done anything to cause a lesion, but I was told it's a very normal lesion, sometimes the bones move and pressure the tendons. At the moment I'm doing some exercises to recover mobility (I can´t take clothes off hahah). Doing this workout tomorrow, will let you know :)
Thanks @yidneth, I will try =) Aw sorry to hear about your shoulder! Maybe also your posture and many hours in front o t he computer? That made it worse for me!
I am cleaning my bedroom, I have a mirror so maybe I can follow along. Well I think I sleep sideways on that shoulder. I just can spread my arm horizontally our up. I am waiting for a phone call to rehab. We will see.
Many people don't realize the importance of recovery at all. In fact, when people see shows like 'The Biggest Loser', what the show doesn't reveal is the recovery that these people go through to push their bodies like that. They are literally taking cold ice baths, seeing massage therapists and chiropractors, and a number of other therapies.
I bet!!! Recovery is so important. I always try not to neglect it but I do get carried away sometimes heheh. Thanks for stopping by!!
I tweaked my back last Weds and have been out since then. I know quite a few people that train through in juries but in my experience (and at my age) I believe it's important to not aggravate the injury any further and take the time to recuperate. Tonight I'm getting back to doing a "mellow" more technical class and will be back at it in full on Monday. Get better!!
sorry to hear about your back! Injuries really suck! Take it easy tonight =)
Shoulder is delicate, be careful with that. I strained my right shoulder like 10 years ago with too much resistance training and computer work at the same time. It still bugs me.
computers are dangerous!!! Maybe that's what made it sensitive in the first place, because I don't recall a specific moment when it happened.
Our bodies are not made for sitting still and moving a mouse for hours, that's for sure.
It was great watching some of your exercise techniques. I hope your shoulder feels better. Whenever I am in pain, I use SAM-e cellfood (take a few drops on the tongue) or add some ashwagandha root powder and moringa leaf powder to my smoothies. Its great for pain and inflammation and its good for you. You can find them on Amazon.
oohh I have a Moringa tree in my garden =) I never use it, but I know I should! Thanks for the tip =)
you're welcome! Moringa leaf is super high in protein too ;)
thanks for sharing, these are the type of things that motivates others! keep in shape, you look beautiful and I am sure anyone can feel your positive vibe!
Upvoted! I am following you for your content and I do not expect you to follow me, although I would love to.

I injured my elbow again a few weeks ago. Happens quite often during spar sessions. Mostly during those instant moments that you do not have a chance to tap... and before I know, I am doubting if I should still go to train or not...
Anyway, I took a two week break to let my elbow heal. It is almost back to normal, but I have this mental fear of injuring it again, so I try to tap more on time...
The thing is now how you can improve if this fear keeps on hanging around on your mind.
oh that happened to me too! The solution is to roll with your arm inside of your belt =) Don't use that arm at all, and try sparring with just one arm. But yes, always tap before the submission is at it's max...
