My experience of using PayPal

I had to make one international money transaction, the other end did not have many options, the ones they have are not feasible for me. Finally, they told me that I could do it via PayPal. I do not have a PayPal account, so I thought of registering it. The payment had to be done so I did not have much of a choice, as there were no other suitable options. When I started registering, there were personal questions to be filled. Like my occupation status, my income bracket and so on. I do not understand why would a payment getaway needs my income details; it is not necessary for them to know. This is the one main reason why I avoid these tools and try to keep it simple as much as possible.

After filling up some data, then it was time for verification, so they asked for photo ID proof, which I provided. Then it was the part of real time identification validation through a video call, I dialed but it gave me an error. I realized then that the error was because I was using my Oman sim and registering on my India account number, so possibly that was the reason the call was getting rejected. By this time, I figured out that someone I know has a PayPal account so finally I requested the person to do the payment on my behalf and he agreed.

The immediate thought that came to me was, since my purpose is solved, let me delete this account completely. I clicked on delete account with deleting all data. And then I get a very surprising email, which I still cannot comprehend. It says account is deleted, but the data remains with them for a certain period of time since they are a financial institution and so on. I am just so annoyed with this, why should they keep the data if I decide to delete the account and that too when the verification process is not even completed. The funny part is all of this is legal so you cannot go and fight with them also. Probably I should have read all the T&Cs better.

This is what I receive from them. Not even days, they will retain the information for some years :-(image.png

These days all these institutions keep collecting your data even if it is their requirement or not, and this is not a very good thing. It's a trap.

Oh, I had a PayPal account years ago too, and ever since it caused nothing but trouble and I ended up losing a fair bit of money, I’ve been avoiding the lot like the plague. And yes, unfortunately, what they do is legal. Perhaps you could use Western Union or MoneyGram in future.
